★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nelson is an outstanding example of what a small town in western North America can be. It is a genuine urban experience within a few steps of wilderness. Its downtown streets feel vibrant, animated and genuine. People seem to come to meet and shop and hang out in their city. How many other cities of ~10,000 can claim so many independent restaurants, coffee shops, useful locally owned businesses and other amenities within walking distance of each other? Nelson has pay parking downtown (it's not expensive!) but because its downtown space is valuable.
