About Mook Fabrics Ltd.

Our History

Like the South Saskatchewan river that runs through the community we’ve called home since the 1940’s, we’ve been a familiar presence in the lives of ‘Hatters and those in Southeastern Alberta.

Originally called Star Meat and Grocery in the mid 1940’s, then Mook & Sons in the early 70’s, Mook Holdings Ltd in the 80’s, and finally known as Mook Fabrics since the late 1990s. From the Star Meat and Grocery days up until the 80’s, we operated continuously out of a corner store / home garage location in the River Flats area of Medicine Hat.

Today, we’ve evolved and expanded our Headquarters in Medicine Hat from that one small garage into 30,000 square feet of fabrics and textiles for retail and wholesale. We’ve also grown beyond Alberta to having an expanded location in Oak Bluff, Manitoba for retail and wholesale and 2 locations in Pennsylvania which serve the Amish and Mennonite communities as well as our wholesale customers all over the United States.

While our business has expanded to meet the needs of local and international customers,  our values and commitment remain rooted in the community. And our phone number has not changed since at least 1957. Hard to get more local than that.

Very poor customer service call to find out what color fur they had in stock the lady had no clue about the fabric that was in her own store so I'm probation in the cab there and back to waste my money to find out that there is no product there that was even remotely what I needed that's why I called very poor customer service don't ever think I'll be dealing with the store over again

Great place to shop of you are a quilter, lots of variety in cottons and poly cottons and fleece, but really no other fabrics. I managed to get 1 thing I needed, upholstery fabric, but that was about it. A young girl who worked there was polite, friendly and helpful. While she was helping us, she was barked at by an older staff member to get on till. Proper customer service would be to finish dealing with the customer in front of you instead of running off to do something else. The grouch of a lady then seemed put off by having to come over to the other cutting table (behind her) to finish cutting my fabric. Yes they have great prices, but their crappy customer service and lack of fabric assortment will be why I won't be going back.

LOVE this store!! Awesome selection, great prices! I never leave here empty handed, always find something to add to my "stash", or to finish a current project. Well worth the 2 hour drive! (Probably a good thing I don't live closer) ;)

I love this place. Wall to wall sewing heaven. There is almost nothing you can't find here. The staff area bit strange. They don't seem to be allowed to chit chat or help much with math of buying fabrics. I don't get that but most people know what they want. They should allow their staff to interact more with customers. I will buy again from there because I love the materials they offer but my experience would have been nicer if the staff were allowed to help me buy fabric. Would it kill you to put a permanent measuring tape on the table ends for customers. Sometimes we need to check things for ourselves. A few more accessory things like buttons, cuffs and zippers would be nice too.

I went in at around 4:00pm and it seemed pretty busy, there's many cotton fabrics (great for quilters) and some nice fashion fabrics, but not a great selection. Everything is cut by the yard, not by meters. They have basic selections of interfaces and elastics (nothing too fancy, not much variety), I took my time going through all the isles and employees answered my questions kindly when I asked.

I had a fresh Timmies with me when I arrived.... so I carefully read all the signs on the door...... No where did it say no drinks allowed. So I took my coffee in with me. After half hour n meeting multiple friendly employees, one approached me and demanded “no drinks allowed” it’s posted on the door. She demanded I go out side.... i kindly said “I’m sorry, I had read all the signs to make sure. I’ll take it out” She just demanded I go outside.... How about making sure it’s actually posted before being unkind about it? I’ll respect the rules....but you can’t demand what you don’t first let people know it’s a policy. I’ll don’t enjoy rude treatment....I’ll be fabric shopping elsewhere.

I was at this location a few weeks ago and the staff were wonderful to me and I even had a child in tow. Great prices & excellent selection as well as perfectly organized and CLEAN. Loved it! My only suggestion is not to have the remnants in such a deep bin, it made them difficult to look though. Also, the upholstery fabrics (tapestry) that are leaning up on that wall would be easier seen if racked in a bin so they won't flop over. Please, pretty please open an outlet in Calgary ??
