About Mongo's Grill

Our History

Great enterprises are sometimes created in the family’s garage. Mongo’s…was not. It was an evolution that brought Mongo’s to fruition–from five restaurateurs with 150 years of dining experience through decades of fads and fantasy dining.

In the 1960’s, the rage was fast food. They conquered that. The 70’s focused on family dining while the 80’s and 90’s was all-casual, all the time—from attire to menu options. Been there, done that and certainly didn’t want to do that again. So the five partners holed up in an upscale coffee shop and noodled (get it?) and cogitated on where to take their ideas of where international dining was headed. And came up with these must haves: healthy options, farm fresh ingredients, comfortable, customizable, upscale and FUN. It had to be a place to experience. Not just a place to fill a hunger need.

Casual elegance was born. In 2004, on a sunny, chilly day, Mongo’s opened their doors in Winnipeg. The first Mongolian grill-style restaurant in Winnipeg and the flagship of the five locations soon to follow.

The drumbeat began—knowledgeable, intelligent service with a quirky sense of humour and a pledge to create a palate pleasing dining experience from the choices of ingredients to the selection of upscale complementing beverages and desserts. Add into mix the flair and entertainment of the grillmasters—their jokes are lame—but their smiles are genuine, and the dream was achieved.

Interesting concept - you can make your own bowl of salad and grill. Pricing is for one bowl only although they do have prices available for unlimited bowl servings. You take a bowl, add the veggies, meat and sauces you want and then take it to the grill where they grill it for you. Makes for a very healthy meal. Good quality of raw food and attentive service.

I went here by myself for some dinner, Saturday evening but still not too busy. The hostess didn't seem to know what tables where taken but she was friendly enough. I waited over 10 minutes for a server to come take my drink order and nothing, even as other people that entered after me for served. I didn't make a big fuss about it because I know there can be things in the back. when she finally did come over I said "Hi" and she walked away without saying anything. I just put on my jacket and walked out. I hope they feel bad because I was really looking forward to a nice meal.

Ordered lunch on Skip the dishes. Asked for Crunchy noodles on the side if possible. Said I would survive without them. They sent me the noodles and a message! Best customer service! Love this location. Thank you!

Still some very decent people in Winnipeg. A fellow patron anonymously bought meals for a table of uniformed personnel. What a great sense of community!! Enjoyed a huge first portion, my second trip was unnecessary, but no regrets. Great meal, looking forward to the next visit.

I used to love this place, but quality is dropping quicker than my noodles can burn to the grill. The grill is set too high and the cooks can't keep up, resulting in food wasted by being burned to the grill, losing half of your meal in the process. Also witnessed a cook grab a plate off the ground and continue to cook everyones food without washing his hands. Burnt pieces in the meal is common, but the only real fix is to do it again. I realize they may be understaffed, but the grill should not be cranked up to save time over quality.

Recently went with a colleague from work here for lunch the Manager really needs some training and a little bit of common sense on how he should treat his customers. I always thought restaurants such a these you would have trained professionals providing you the best service and experience so that u revisit the restaurant but UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Would not recommend this to anyone to visit ! unless you want to spoil ur day for the treatment from the untrained and worst restaurant manager.

Exceptional staff working yesterday evening and wanted to take a moment to thank them for their patience and kindness. We are currently under going kitchen renovations with two very young toddlers. Last night we attempted dinner for the 3rd time ever with both of them in a restaurant. They have done well in the past, but last night was definitely not their night. They were tired, vocal and messy and we felt horribly for leaving the staff with such a big cleanup despite doing our best to keep clean after them. Our one daughter (1 years old) launched her water onto the floor, not to mention noodles and rice are just messy altogether and the floor was covered by the time we were done. Our server Brendan V was exceptionally patient & friendly. Ellyn, another lovely soul whom helped us with our tab and was also nearby helping sensed my stress and was one of the kindest empaths I've ever met. When I explained our situation and apologized for the mess, she assured me not to worry one bit, I said "you must have kids?" and she replied "no, my friends have many, one day though ... " again assuring me not to worry and that she has seen worse messes from adults. Bless her heart for being so kind. We apologize for the mess and can't thank you enough for the great customer service, lack of judgment and just being so kind. A great customer service experience which is rare these days.

Great place, I haven't been to one of such you choice and we make it places. I was surprised by the choices, to what I expected there were a lot of vegetarian choices, which my friends loved since they are vegetarian. I loved the meat options as well they give you a lot to think about. You don't need to worry about the portions since it's all the same whatever you want at the same rate. You can stuff as much of anything you want in your plate as long as it fits. Furthermore, I liked their sauce choices, I am a big fan of Asian cuisine and their sauce options were perfect for me from Teriyaki to Kung Pao, you name it they have it. The guys who make your food great at this I felt like I was watching artists. And the best thing about it affordable. This has to be one of my go to places from now on. And yes the staff is friendly and welcoming. I hope you all like it as much as I did.
