In a June 8, 2022 decision, The Honourable Justice A. Ross of the Supreme Court of British Columbia ordered the sale of a condominium located in Richmond, BC, after determining that the property was purchased with funds fraudulently obtained from Prima Technology, Inc. (“PTI”), by Mary Yang and her husband Samuel Zhu in 2007. The proceedings were a continuation of PTI’s attempts to recover the amounts awarded against Mary and Samuel, a total of over US $11 million including legal fees, interest and court costs.
Though the condominium property was registered to Mary Yang’s mother-in-law Yunyu Yang, PTI argued that the property was purchased through Mary’s financial contributions between 2010 and 2011. In response, Yunyu submitted that the funds used for the property were her own.
In review of the evidence, the Court concluded that while Yunyu legally owned the property, she was unable to prove the original source of her funds, inferring that the source was ultimately from Mary and therefore Mary beneficially owned the property. The Court declared that the property was to be held in a constructive trust for PTI, and consequently ordered for its sale to partially satisfy the penalties imposed against Mary.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Stay away, dont bother calling. Charged 300 for initial call, 600$ hr lawyer answered and doesn't say nothing. Then initial meeting 2 lawyers in there, little did I know I was paying over 800$ hr for these 2 RIP offs. The 600$ hr guy was in there for 10 mins till he told me his rate and left but changed for 1 full hour.
The 235$ hr lawyer I hired to do an affidavit took over 1 month to do 9 pages. At one point had to call her boss and had meeting because she lied, was not doing what I paid for and she called it a miscommunication even though I hired her to do affidavit, there was nothing else for her to do. She overcharged me highly, was told 3k was almost double. No return phone calls on overcharging so have to file complaint with court now or pay these RIP offs.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Do not use this company it’s a huge rip off. Unfortunately we only found out about it after selling our home. While buying our property we used this service because we were referred by our mortgage broker and now after selling our place 8 years later we found out that they charged us unreasonable price as oppose to a great lawyer we chose to use when selling our place. We ended up paying half of the amount we paid for this company.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I used Miller Thomson's services in a separation. Although the partner associated was incredibly pleasant and helpful throughout the process, I was billed for items that were a result of missed steps in our final agreement (at least, that is my understanding).
There were particularities around my land ownership that were left unresolved for over a year after our separation because it was not clearly addressed in the final separation document. I was forced to take my own time to follow up with all parties involved to ensure I was removed from the mortgage. Thankfully, this was not something that came back to haunt me but it could have gone very poorly if my ex partner defaulted or missed payments.
In a normal world, this would not have been an issue but given that I was billed for things like one off emails, I would expect that this would be something that should have been addressed by my legal council well before it became an issue.
Overall, the partner supporting this file was kind and caring but I was left with a very sour taste after this and it has made me very skeptical about legal council moving forward.
