Mary Kardash Child Care Inc. is a community-orientated program which provides a respectful, safe and nurturing child centered learning environment where children and their families can reach their potential and contribute as responsive, capable citizens of this community.

About us

Mary Kardash, Child Care Centre, is a not-for-profit organization located in Luxton School in the North End/Point Douglas area of Winnipeg. Our Centre began operation in September 1991 in the Luxton Community centre with 16 preschool spaces. In 1993 there was a demand from the community for school-age spaces. Luxton school offered space to house this demand. In spring of 1993 the Luxton Community Centre informed us that they could no longer offer us space, and the preschool program relocated to a location at 1357 Main Street. For two consecutive years, 1998, 1999, Luxton school agreed to give us two more rooms for our growing Centre and the Centre moved in under one roof. We now then able to accommodate 37 preschools and 30 school-age children. In 2012 we recognized that there was a need once again for spaces in the community. The Centre approached the current Principal and asked for another room to help accommodate the community’s need for four- and five-year-old children. In 2014 we added an additional 16 preschool spaces to our program. In 2015 we yet again found a need for more spaces, this time being our school-age program, and were faced with having to asked families to leave our program if we could not accommodate the Kindergarten children’s transition to the school-age program. In redesigning our school-age program area, we were able to increase space for another 30 school-age children. We now can accommodate 53 preschool children and 60 age children.

HISTORY OF MARY KARDASH CHILD CARE CENTRE

Mary Kardash Child Care Inc. began operation in September of 1991. The idea of having a Centre came from parents in the Luxton School area who saw a need. Originally the Centre was called St. Cross Child Care Centre after the street near the school. In October of 1995, we were proud to re-name the Centre after Mary Kardash who was an advocate for the needs of children and who also lived in the North End of the city.

For the first two years of operation, the Centre was located in the Luxton Community Centre, however, in 1993, Luxton School provided us with space to house the school-age program, and the preschool program relocated to Main and Cathedral. In the summer of 1998, Luxton School again agreed to give us one room for the preschool program, and the Centre moved in under one roof. In the summer of 1999, we were given another room to expand our preschool program. Mary Kardash Child Care Centre Inc. now has 37 preschool spaces and 40 school-age spaces.

PHILOSOPHY

We believe every child is a celebration and a wonder. It is our job as adults to make sure they know that. Children must be accepted exactly as they are, unconditionally, for them to grow and thrive. We must accept and affirm all parts of who they are. That way, we can teach them what they need to know to be successful, satisfied children.

Our rich curriculum provides experiences to encourage children to develop creativity, self-confidence, and positive self-image. They should also have the opportunity to solve problems, make choices and become independent.

Our Early Childhood Educators are loving and warm individuals who are trained in child development. They provide activities in response to the diverse needs and abilities within the community we serve. Early Childhood Educators encourage children to develop to their fullest potential.

We believe that children thrive in an environment of love and security and that the parent is the most important adult in the child’s life. We encourage parents to be involved in all aspects of the Centre.
