Maple Hill Farms, without explicitly saying so, like to give the impression that they farm free range hens. Their promotional material, on their website and on leaflets provided in health food outlets, show flocks of hens roaming sparsely in wide open pasture. A visit to their website reveals that hens are reared in barns with natural light (they use the phase "in flocks" which is itself misleading, being a natural social gathering of animals). Photos of this are not of course provided, so there is not indication of true living conditions or how closely the birds are packed together. A trip to google maps reveals what appears to be nothing more than a couple large industrial scale barns on several acres of unpastured land. The fact that they use such disingenuous means of advertising has swayed me from continuing to buy their products.

Haven't been to your farm but must have passed it when I went farm foraging. Got your little brownies through Save On delivered and they are delightful. From now on I will ask for yours. The little ones go as far as the big nothing white nameless ones.

It's puzzling why any business these days does not have a social media presence, especially when facebook is free. Maple Hill Farms is an example of such business. Any how, I am writing about their eggs that they sell across supermarkets. Their products claim to organic and free range. Unfortunately, their eggs which can bought on sale at supermarkets for around $3.49 a dozen for medium sized neither taste nor look like they are organic or free range. BC has some of the best eggs in North America. Typically, the yolk of organic and free range eggs is organish or dark in color and very flavorful. These eggs by Maple Hill are medium to light yellow in color and the yolk lacks much flavour, unlike the competition's free range or organic eggs. I can't help what they feed their chickens. To me this means to me the eggs lack nutrients such as a god content of B12 of around 80% (which is missing on the label) and the hens are probably not fed much Omega 3 rich foods. I imagine MHF might cheap out on what they feed them as well. In summary, we won't be buying these eggs again when non free range and regular eggs both taste and look the same and cost much less than the MHF brand.

We eat MHF eggs and chicken and find them tops! Terrence & M, I'm not sure what you speak of. I've observed the laying hens out on pasture, and after having MH specialty chicken, I don't wish to eat any other kind. Free Range eggs have orange/yellow dark yolks.
