About Magnus Theatre

Magnus Theatre is Northwestern Ontario’s only professional theatre, a not-for-profit registered charity, and a full member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT). For nearly 50 years, our well-crafted productions have earned us a reputation as a leading arts organization in the region and beyond.

Magnus was founded in 1971 by British director Burton Lancaster and was incorporated in 1972. The company operates under the terms of the Canadian Theatre Agreement and engages artists from the Canadian Actors Equity Association (CAEA) and the Associated Designers of Canada (ADC). Each season, Magnus produces seven professional Mainstage productions, and the company’s programs now reach over 40,000 adults, students, and seniors throughout Northwestern Ontario each year.

Magnus is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) and operates under the terms of the Canadian Theatre Agreement (CTA), a collective agreement negotiated with the Canadian Actors’ Equity Association (CAEA). The CAEA is the professional association of performers, directors, choreographers, fight directors and stage managers who are engaged in live performance in English Canada. Magnus Theatre also engages professional lighting, set, and costume designers who are members of the Associated Designers of Canada (ADC), a national arts service organization dedicated to representing the interests of designers working in the performing arts.

Magnus provides distinctive artistic programming and services that are reflected in four core areas of activity: Mainstage productions, Theatre in Education (TIE), Regional Touring, and New Play Development.

The show was very well preformed; the set design was cheerful and very well managed by the running crew. The actual theatre was very chilly however. The shawls were a very nice touch and greatly appreciated.

The performance that we saw was fantastic, as good as anything I've seen in Toronto or Chicago. The staff was pleasant and helpful, the service at the bar was outstanding. If you have the chance to attend a performance here do not hesitate!

Went last Christmas to see a Christmas Carol. We had a great time! Intimate setting and wonderful performances. This is my first visit since they moved from the East End many years ago. I loved it then, and still do now.

The plays I have seen here are absolutely amazing. From comedy, to tragedy, a sing along, to something serious you must hear, there is something for everyone. Seating is comfortable, drinks and food are available before the show, and sometimes after. I have had the opportunity to meet many cast members after the show as well, as many love to mingle with their audiance, in my expierence.

This was the first Magnus Theratre performance I've seen since the pandemic began~the music was a mix of Bluegrass, country & rock?????~lot's of singing, amazing musicians~the script of many comedies relating to Covid-19 in families, businesses, and gov't?~situations we could all relate to~the actor's were extremely expressive ? in all their character roles~the actor's were really respectful of our time~Covid-19 safety measures in place~social distancing, hand sanitizers, masks, everything was well marked, exiting one row at a time, etc ~the bar area was closed & no paper programs due to Covid-19~it was lot's of laughing, signing, and really fun☺~well worth a visit if you can

Felt very safe in terms of COVID-19 protocols. Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol was wonderful. It is a whirlwind of an emotional journey. You fly through the frenetic first act trying to get your bearings along with Jacob Marley. In act two, the pace slows to bring Marley and the audience to an eloquent and heartrending resolution. Jacob James is a chameleon of an actor that guides you through the transformations of Marley and Scrooge. James alters his dialect and physicality seamlessly as he embodies each of the dozen characters. You feel every twist in this emotional expedition through life, death and the afterlife till like Scrooge, you land emotionally spent at home. Thank you Mr. James for the adventure.
