Kent Gate was the last to be built in 1878 and 1879. Unlike all other Gates, Kent Gate never played a role as a functional part of the city's fortifications, it was built for ornamental purposes only as part of the conservation plan of the fortification proposed by the then Governor General Lord Dufferin after the departure of the British garrison. It is named after the Duke of Kent, father of Queen Victoria, who contributed financially to its construction.
