This google account is an alias. I graduated from this school last year. I will say it had some amazing teachers and stand-out programs. Despite being an athiest and not liking the Catholic school system (I was forced to go there by my parents), I had a very good time at Holy Cross. Honestly, I have so much nostalgia for the school and care a ton about a lot of the teachers that I almost don't want to say this next part. But it has to be said: The student body was a disgusting mess and this seemingly went unaddressed. There were definitely many students who were wonderful, and I won't lie, I came out with a huge chunk of my grade being my friend. But for every nice student there was a problematic one. Heck, even some of the nice students were problematic. I could not walk through the halls for even a minute without hearing the words gay, queer, and/or f*ggot used in negative ways in the other students' every day slang, as though there were no queer students at the school. As though those words wouldn't dig into my skin every day for four years. Maybe that's just teenagers being teenagers, and honestly, its inevitable that some things like this will slip through. I've been online and I know teenagers, and its not like its out of the ordinary for teens to act and speak like this, despite it being completely inappropriate and offensive, and ignores the legacy of pain and suffering the f-slur represents for the LGBTQ+ community. But not once did I ever see someone try to end this behaviour. Maybe it was because these words were only spoken in the halls and not as often said during class time, or maybe because a teacher was always just out of earshot, but there's no way that everyone was completely unaware of this issue. I know religion often creates a conflicting viewpoint against the LGBTQ+ community, but it doesn't have to, and I think the school's values on some level did a passable-ish job reflecting that. But the student body did not. And once again, I'm not saying this is a problem exclusive to this school. Honestly, I think this is just a problem with people in general and the homophobic and transphobic belief structure that its "cool" to have. But I'm tired of it and I don't want anyone else to have to go through what I did. To have to walk through the halls and hear your very identity used as insults by people who couldn't begin to understand your struggle and the weight of their words. To hear the words that were used, and still are used, to dehumanize people like you, thrown around as if its just slang instead of literal hate speech. This shouldn't be happening anymore, anywhere. It's 2018, respect people's identities. Also, can the boy's bathrooms please get some paper towels???
