Promoting Prairie Terroir

About Hillside Food Inc.

Prairie Terroir

The concept of prairie terroir speaks to the innate and immutable relationship between food and the land that produced it. Food is more than just an expression of culture; food is an expression of place – uniquely flavoured by both the land and the hand that nurtures it. At Hillside Food, as a passionate team of chefs and local farmers, we have embraced the concept ‘prairie terroir’ and are committed to transforming Saskatchewan into an experience you can taste – prairie terroir. Hand milled flour, pasture-grazed beef and wild Saskatoon berries.

For over three generations, our family has farmed our little patch of the prairies. As stewards of the land we believe it is our responsibility to grow the highest quality produce in an ethical and sustainable manner. We have partnered with local producers in our community who share our vision of sustainable agriculture to bring a wide variety of local prairie produce to your plate. Farm-fresh eggs, hand crafted mustard’s and wildflower? honey.

At Hillside Food, flavour is everything. Prairie terroir is about capturing the taste of golden fields, unbroken pasture and the wide-open sky. Our land – our history – has inspired us to craft food that embodies the essence of the prairies. We are proud to be taking our appetite for agriculture and sharing it with you – from our hand to yours.

Come, experience the taste of the prairies.

Farm Fresh Food

As farmers we are here to offer you direct access to farm fresh food — no intermediaries or middlemen. We want you to experience the same fresh and vibrant food that we were raised on. Our products come from our backyard and are processed in our very own commercial kitchen.

Free range Mangalitsa pork, fresh garden vegetables, grass fed beef, and acres of edible seeds and grains produced using regenerative agricultural practices.

Our commitment to farm fresh food goes beyond what we alone can produce. Many of our neighbors share our passion for regenerative agriculture and producing healthy sustainable foods. Through partnerships with local producers, most of whom live within just a few short miles of our farm, we are able to gain access to many fresh ingredients that we use in our products.

Golden yolk eggs, honey, wild berries, local bison, local cheeses. While we don’t sell these products directly, we use them as ingredients in our own products to ensure our products remain true to our farm fresh mantra.

On Regenerative Farming

We practice regenerative farming. What is that you ask?

Well, regenerative farming is a loose collection of farming practices and methods enacted with the singular focus of improving the quality soil. It’s based on our understanding that growing healthy food means starting with health soil.

This isn’t a crazy or radical notion. It’s pretty simple, actually. It’s the straightforward logic that ‘everything comes from somewhere’. Iron and zinc don’t spontaneously manifest in your salad, we understand that these, and most other, minerals and nutrients found in our food have their origins in the soil.

But it’s not just about nutrition. Nutrient rich food isn’t only healthier, it’s brighter, more vibrant and so much tastier. Want evidence; compare that pale red tomato on your last deli sandwich to those beautiful scarlet ones you borrowed from your neighbour’s garden.

So, we focus on our soils. Secure in the knowledge that health soils mean healthy food.

We’re better than sustainable. We’re regenerative.
