Fei Huang and Bin Mu come from a family of small business owners and dumpling makers. In Jiaoding, China, Fei Huang and Bin Mu’s parents run a successful dumpling house, serving locals authentic, traditional meals made from regionally sourced, high-quality ingredients.

With this cultural knowledge and family know-how, in 2014, the young couple made their way to Canada and started both a family of their own and H&M Dumpling House. The respect these entrepreneurs have for tradition and their emphasis on sourcing and supporting local producers – like their family’s dumpling house in Jiaoding – led them to innovate on a Chinese classic while retaining authenticity. This unique blend of authenticity, quality and innovation ensures an H&M dumpling transcends a traditional customer base without sacrificing quality. Not surprisingly, the restaurant was a hit.

A few years later, tragedy struck. On a cold Tuesday in February of 2017, H&M was the unfortunate collateral damage when a neighbouring business caught fire. Being attached to the same building, the smoke, water, and fire damage were too great. The building was condemned, later torn down, and Fei Huang and Bin Mu were forced to close the dumpling house.

After assessing options, the couple chose to go beyond producing dumplings in a restaurant. Instead, they decided to manufacture them for retailers and wholesalers. In little over a year, the young company has ten employees, and most major retail chains carry its product in Saskatchewan. An amazing feat.

But they’re just getting started. The H&M team plans to expand their distribution across Western Canada and beyond while also increasing their product lines with wontons, noodles, steamed bread, and stuffed buns.
