Bad service, the servers were to busy hanging out sitting at table together and not assisting patrons. The food was okay but not great. I suggest going somewhere else.

I am from out of town and was recommended this place by a family member. It did not disappoint. It was busy and I definitely think that there were some staff working harder than others but the girl helping us, the bartender, was a Rockstar. The food was great, the drinks were good, and the service was nice. I will say it was a touch pricey but I have no problem paying for good service and food. The haddock fish and chips were delicious. I think this place deserves 5 stars but comes up short in management, I know short staffing is a huge problem right now but there was, like, 3 girls working the whole dining room, bar, and takeout orders. There didn't seem to be much management involvement that I saw.

Terrible experience! We were forced to get takeout as we came for lunch with our 9 year old daughter and there was no family dining section of the pub. The staff were unsympathetic once we they realized we would not be dining in, but we went ahead and order takeout fish and chips none the less. No exageration, this was the WORST fish and chips we have ever had! The fish was grossly undercooked and the batter was literally raw! After forcing down a few bites we immediatly stopped eating for fear of getting sick from the uncooked batter. I'm willing to give most places a second chance, but this meal was beyond redemption.

Stopped here for lunch after coming back from camping on Malcolm Island. We had been to Gus's on our last camping trip to Bere Point two years prior and remembered it as being pretty good, so after getting off the 11am ferry from Sointula this morning, heading to Gus's again was an easy call. We were seated right away; the place was mostly empty and the waitress told us to sit wherever we liked. We chose a booth with a window view. First thing I noticed was the overpowering smell of bleach. Ok, I get how lots of people just can't let go of the ongoing covid hysteria, but most other restaurants we've been to use less off-putting cleansers to wipe down tables. Really, how are you expected to enjoy your food after being clobbered as soon as you sit down with a smell that reminds you of toilet bowl cleaner? That aside, we got menus pretty promptly; the service overall was okay (but not great). Since my wife had looked at the menu online while we were on the ferry, we already had a pretty good idea what we wanted: I ordered their "Signature" burger, my wife tried the halibut fish and chips. The food arrived in reasonable time; as I mentioned, the place wasn't busy. The good news first! My wife thoroughly enjoyed her fish and chips. A large piece of halibut, lightly breaded, done to perfection. My burger, on the other hand, well, I'd rate it a solid 2.5. After the second bite, I wished I had ordered something else. The meat was greasy. Rather than using lean or even extra lean ground beef, their burgers are made with regular fatty ground beef. Fat grease literally dripped from my burger as I was eating, making a small puddle on my plate. Yuck! The bun was pathetic. You know, the ultra cheap white bread hamburger buns you buy for $2.00/dozen at Safeway. Not even toasted. Slightly stale. The bottom half essentially dissolved before I was even halfway through, with the fatty grease and the too thick layer of relish. Since we had been eating really healthy during our camping trip, I decided on fries with the burger rather than soup or salad. A generous serving was offered, but looked like frozen fries out of a bag rather than made in the kitchen (I make my own fries, so can usually spot the factory cut potatoes). But overall they were good, though a touch on the oily side. I guess, on balance, for pub fare in a small town, Gus's is a reasonable option. But if we were to lunch there again, I definitely would think twice about ordering another burger.

Travelled fo Port McNeil from Sooke, had some food from Gus Pub for dinner. Some of the most amazing food we’ve ever had, friendly staff, and fast service. Will be back!

I am staying in Port McNiel this weekend and although there is not alot in the way of dinner options, Gus's Pub was a pleasant surprise. There were only 2 servers on for about 15 tables so there was a bit of a wait. This is to be expected during this labour shortage that most of the hospitality is experiencing. This being said, my halibut and chips were done perfectly! The halibut portion was very generous and the ratio of fish to batter was perfect. I would definitely go back again and try something else on the menu.
