About GlobalFest @ Elliston Park

A Brief History of GlobalFest

The groundwork for GlobalFest began in 1993 with the formation of The Calgary Fireworks Festival Society. The not-for-profit Society searched for a suitable fireworks launch site in Calgary for eight years to no avail. There were many potential sites, but none combined the suitable large viewing area, safety regulations, and ability to allow large-scale pyrotechnics to be launched. It wasn’t until 2001 when the Society discovered Elliston Park in Calgary’s Greater Forest Lawn district that the dream could now become reality.

This was a chance encounter that brought together The Calgary Fireworks Festival Society and the International Avenue Arts and Culture Centre, who were interested in beginning a multicultural festival based in East Calgary. The two groups met and they made presentations to the International Avenue BRZ on the same day. Discussions began, and the two groups soon realized the amazing impact their events would have if they partnered together to give Calgary a truly world class celebration of cultural diversity.

GlobalFest burst onto the scene in 2003 with 10 cultural pavilions and three countries presenting pyromusicals in Calgary’s very own international fireworks festival. On the fourth and final night of the festival, GlobalFest celebrated a remarkable accomplishment. The festival reached attendance of close to 100,000 in the very first year, making GlobalFest one of Calgary’s top draws for local citizens and tourists alike.

GlobalFest’s mandate as a not-for-profit society is to produce an inclusive, world class, multi-faceted arts and culture festival that celebrates and showcases cultural diversity and artistic excellence within our communities and across the globe.

MISSION STATEMENT

GlobalFest is a not-for-profit community development agency dedicated to celebrating, showcasing and promoting Calgary’s ethno-cultural diversity and artistic excellence. We enrich the lives of our citizens and strengthen our community, while simultaneously enhancing Alberta’s reputation as an international destination. GlobalFest is dedicated to facilitating discussions around racism, discrimination, oppression and justice, through forums and educational programming with the intention of sustaining commitment by our community to work towards a more inclusive society.

A fun experience. There's food for the fireworks show along with other entertainment. It's absolutely not needed to enter GlobalFest to see the fireworks. The view is the same. You can still see the fireworks outside the park (no need to pay) because 17th Ave is shut down. Bring lawn chairs or grab a spot on the grass for a spectacular show!

Totally worth it if you buy your tickets in advance. Get there early and find parking is important. Food and entertainment are alright, may use some improvements. Be well prepared with bugs pray, and sunblock. Find a spot around 8:30pm. The fireworks starts at 9:30pm. The south-west side of the lake has the best viewing. Don't get too close to the speakers, as it may ruin your experience, and have to wear earplugs. The fireworks are coordinated with the music. Beautiful views every year.

Globalfest was fantastic. There were many performances to take in, lots of food and some really cool stuff at some vendors. And to top it the fireworks. Those were absolutely amazing. If you go, make sure to make plans for logistics. Driving and parking can be difficult. There are shuttles.

The fireworks here is just fantastic. With a span of 5 days, definitely the best way to chill out near the lake in summer time. Be sure to the ticket early when they are cheap!

Get here early when gates open to make the most of your experience checking out the food stalls, otherwise you'll be stuck in line for hours closer to sunset time when they fireworks start. It was a lovely experience trying out authentic Indonesian and Jamaican food, I can only wish that more countries and cultures be represented in the future, because Calgary definitely has the communities for it. The fireworks display on the finale were totally worth the ticket price, the lake really makes it extra special. Had a fun time and will definitely be back next year :)

I love Globalfest at Ellison park and have been going for over 15 years. It's one of my favorite festivals to photograph and each year I buy advanced tickets for the follow year as soon as the festival is over. The fireworks are world class and I highly recommend this!
