★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The density of the air mystically shifts as you slowly make your way towards the Cairn. A tall, looming structure, of such a height that observing the upper surface is nearly impossible. The three angled sides radiate with energy, a clear presence towards all visible directions. Formed by the solidarity of 20th century students, this concrete monument represents the arduous physical and mental effort continuously applied by thousands of men and women to this day. As the sunlight reflects off a pure neutral paint, the deep red tone within the letter 'E" contrasts with vigour. A reminder of the driving energy behind the technological progress emanated by the applied science faculty, whose buildings exist only meters away. This simple concrete structure stands strong, amid tens of thousands of brilliant minds within a world-renowned city of millions. A large, heavy concrete base provides the stability and support to a monument which was once demolished and rebuilt. Symbolic, and metaphorical towards the stability provided to our civilized societies by the innovation and creativity originating from engineers. Through calm and turmoil, conflict and resolution, storms and sunshine, this monumental symbol stands proud, representing not only the engineers at the University of British Columbia, but all engineers across the world. As years pass by, memories and emotions change and are forgotten, paint fades and concrete cracks, but the Cairn will continue to stand strong within thousands of people's hearts, just as it stands now at the heart of the Vancouver campus.
