My girl loves coming to drama class here. Staff does a decent job and the kids come away happy and better performers. The parking for the school sucks horribly.

This place, at best, is a decent starting point for kids from rich families that are interested in theater. To begin with, it's way too much money for mediocre show at best. Both tickets and registration are overpriced, and to make it even worse the school has a rule that every student has to buy six tickets for their show which is a complete waste of money for families of anything less than six. As for the shows themselves, nothing I've seen here has ever been overly impressive. Chock-full of technical problems and prop mishaps, I've been told by my son who attended fall/spring classes for a couple years that these kids only get one shot at rehearsing in the actual venue before their big moment. A lot of the shows have potential and could probably be really great with more rehearsal time and one-on-one vocal training. There is a HUGE element of nepotism among the directors, so don't count on your child scoring a lead role anytime soon regardless of their talent. Boys are definitely also favored for lead roles and gender bending is only used as a last resort. Favoritism of grandchildren of directors, boys, and long time students (in that order) is usually how shows are cast. This dynamic usually worked out pretty well for my son, who was one of the three or four boys in a class of twenty or so. There's a big lack of professionalism and shows can be pretty messy. That's not to say there isn't any positives here. This place shouldn't be your first choice for kids wanting to go into theater professionally, but smaller children (preferably with rich parents...) who just want to try something new and have fun can get a lot out of the younger theater classes. The music, visual art, vocal and dance classes here are also a good choice. The teachers for these classes are kind, patient, and good with kids. The summer camps here, while usually producing a less than stellar end result, are tons of fun. My son wanted to try a summer program a couple years ago and loved it a lot more than the fall classes. He made a good couple friends in his years at EJS and claimed that the students he worked with were very kind and fun to be around. Overall, not the best place for teens and kids who aim to take theater to a professional level, but younger kids just looking for some fun can begin to learn the basics of performing here and have a good time. Local theater for young people is pretty rare to come by, so it's good that this place at least puts effort into turning kids into stronger performers.
