About École Varennes

Who We Are

École Varennes is a vibrant French Immersion school with a population of 358 students and a very supportive community of parents. We work hard to promote respect and personal growth within a French-language milieu. École Varennes first opened its doors in September 1951, as Varennes School. We have been a totally French Immersion school since 1984. All classes are taught in French with the exception of English Language Arts. All students engage in regularly scheduled physical education and music classes. Information technology is integrated into all subject areas.

Mission

As a French Immersion school, École Varennes provides a safe and respectful learning environment which facilitates the acquisition of useful knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for responsible citizenship.

Motto

To honour, to inspire, to discover.

History

Long before St. Vital became a village, the area surrounding the school was known as Varennes. Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, also known as La Vérendrye, was the first European to visit the forks of the Red and Assiniboine rivers in 1738. The famous explorer came from the north-eastern village of Varennes, France—the village in which Louis XIV and Marie-Antoinette sought refuge before their beheading in 1791, and a village that was at the centre of the Battle of Argonne during the First World War.

When École Varennes first opened its doors as Varennes School in 1951, it had 235 students in six classrooms with no library, gymnasium, music room, and certainly no computer room.

Nineteen sixty-one marked the peak of its enrolment with 711 students. In 1978, the first French Immersion classes were added, and in 1984 the school became a French-Immersion-only facility.

The beautiful mural on the school's west side was painted by Jill Sellers in 2000 with the help of every student in the school.

Great school that operates based on a similar philosophy as montessori tailoring the learning based on each child's specific learning style. I highly recommend this immersion school and my first language is French.

This is a smaller and older school but it is in a quiet area and has all of the amenities that an elementary school needs. It is one of the only French immersion programs in the immediate area. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking at their child's future endeavors. It is important to learn language at a young age as those who do so later in life process their second language differently.

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly commend the principal Amanda Haworth for her leadership in dealing with ongoing safety issues between the Ecole Varennes and it’s neighbors. For 18 years my neighbor and I have spoken to and written to the principals at Ecole Varennes to deal with the unsafe problem of parents using the back alley as a drop off and pick up zone for their children. In fact we have even taken the matter to City Hall. During that time there have been near accidents; aggressive verbal confrontations including offensive gestures and even physical confrontations (parents cars left on, blocking homeowners from leaving for work, have been driven down the back alley). It was an obviously unsafe situation. While principals prior to Ms. Haworth have advised parents not to drop their children off in the back alley, Ms. Haworth took decisive action. Access to the front parking lot was made available from the back alley and decisively Ms. Haworth listened to us and posted signs that the back alley was not a drop off or pickup zone. Additionally, Ms. Haworth has physically stood at the entrance from the back alley to the school yard and personally redirected parents to the correct and safe drop-off and pick up zone. During this whole period Ms. Haworth took the time to communicate with us about the steps she was taking to solve the problem While there are still a few parents who persists in this behavior Ms. Haworth’s actions has dramatically reduced the safety hazard for the children and the problems for the school’s neighbors in the back alley. The Louis Riel School Division has an excellent leader in Ms. Haworth. A true leader is one who listens. Sincerely, Ivor Grant Grateful Neighbor
