I've been shopping here since sometime around 1980. I was barely tall enough to see over the counter when my mother would send me to E&B with three dollars in an envelope, with a note written on it, "One pack of 20 duMaurier King Size." The clerks would sell me the cigarettes without hesitation, and then I would get to spend the change on candy... 50Β’ change meant I could get 50 sour candies... But I usually tried to hang on to one coin in case I heard the whistle of a train approaching the track behind the store, in which case I'd rush to place the coin in the track ahead of it, to squish it on the track. As the train passed, I'd stand so close that I could touch it on the way by. I suppose that, back then, the E&B must have been owned by E.W.Bickle, who also owned the newspaper (the Comox Valley Free Press, aka "The Green Sheet", since the front page was always printed on green paper, for some reason) which had a huge printing press in the building adjacent to the E&B Market (which later became the local radio station, and is now the Waichay Friendship Center).
