About Us

Donwood is a faith-based organization supported by eight Winnipeg-based Mennonite Brethren Churches. Donwood has five locations throughout Winnipeg providing different levels of care at each. Whether it’s personal care or independent living, we endeavor to live by our Mission Statement every day at each facility.

Donwood is a place that enables the elderly to make the transition from their home to a caring community and allows the elderly to age with dignity and grace. It is a place where residents, tenants and family members know there is a commitment to continually improve the care, the services and the facilities.

Donwood strives to care for seniors with dignity, respect and Christian values. Take a moment to learn about our defining features:

Attentive Care & Services

We strive to be a ‘Home of Choice’ as we provide quality service and excellent clinical care from a Christian perspective. Our team of staff in the Personal Care Home includes Healthcare Aides, Nurses, Recreation Facilitators and other disciplines including an Occupational Therapist, Rehabilitation Assistant, Registered Dietitian, Chaplain, Foot Care Nurse and Massage Therapist. Together we work to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of our residents.

Person Centered Care

At Donwood Personal Care Home, we are on a journey of learning and growth in the way we provide care. The majority of Personal Care Homes were built and designed to provide services from a ‘medical model’ of care that emphasized disabilities and medical needs. Today, changes in health care delivery and the way we support the well-being of older adults is changing across the long-term care sector. At Donwood, we embrace the need to shift the way we provide care away from an institutional model to a person-centered model of care. To us, that means providing care that honours the uniqueness of every person, provides flexibility in care routines, and truly treats the environment as a resident’s home. We know that we are just beginning this journey, and we also know that it transforms the experience of our residents, family and staff. To help us on this journey, we seek guidance from those receiving our care, and welcome our residents, families and staff as trusted partners on this culture change journey.

Home Cooked Meals

All our meals, beverages, desserts and snacks are lovingly prepared by our Food Services staff in our on-site kitchen. Our menu reflects the recommended dietary guidelines of the Canada Food Guide, and incorporates resident choices in the meal planning.

Active Resident & Family Advisory Council

Our resident and family satisfaction is directly connected to our attentiveness to input and feedback. We want to work together to promote meaningful living for our residents and tenants at our housing sites. At Donwood Personal Care Home, the Resident & Family Advisory Council meets at least 6x/year with senior leaders to receive information, and provide input and feedback.

Extensive Community Partnerships

Donwood values its relationship with its supporting churches and collaborates with many community partners to provide excellent services. over 100 volunteers help to support us in providing vibrant, creative and innovative programs at the Personal Care Home and Elderly Persons Housing. The financial support of the Donwood Auxiliary and Donwood Foundation provide an opportunity for donors to leave a lasting legacy.

They are so accomodating to my grandparents. One is in assisted living and the other is in the personal care side and the staff do everything they can to arrange safe visits during the pandemic.

They discriminate against people with Alzheimer’s, and won’t allow them to live here if they already have it. They denied my grandfather access because of it. My grandma wanted to live in the assisted living side while my grandfather was in the care home, and now they can’t do their plan to stay together because of the prejudice against people with dementia.

The staff here are the most caring, genuine, and gracious we've ever seen. During this pandemic, and working thru enormous stresses they have gone far out of their way to help us keep in touch with our dad. I know there is a long wait list to get into a home in Winnipeg, our other parent was sent to Arborg! I can tell you they do everything possible to keep married couples together within what the Mb Gov't rules allow, with or without dementia, and between the Extended and Personal Care Home connected facilities at Donwood. Our mom passed before arriving at the EPH but they were doing everything possible to keep them close and together!

My Mom was fine until her health started to deteriorate. Doctor in charge put her on medication for a lengthy time, until I found out about it…and demanded she come off it! Instead of helping her, the nurse in charge along with doctor ordered tylenol, tylenol and more tylenol. Nothing given for bowel movements. one nurse cursed because she had to clean Mom up after making a mess in her bed. Most nurses were nice, but the odd one should have been fired. She got so sick, and was transported to Concordia for xrays, but had to be treated for dehydration, bowel obstruction & sepsis. She died the next day. Cannot recommend this place after what my Mom and our family went through! By the way, if anyone’s loved one is in a care home - demand to see the records. You will be as shocked as I was on what is documented. After communicating with WRHA over several months, the personal care home has promised to upgrade their practices and their treatment protocols. Both their nurses and the doctor need to change in their patient care, in my opinion!
