About Don’t Survive Thrive Academy

Every year, the American Heart Association celebrates Heart Month to raise awareness about heart disease and heart health.

What you may not know is that martial arts are great for the heart. In fact, the cardiac benefits of martial arts give a whole new meaning to the idea of cardiovascular fitness.

With that in mind, here are some ways that taking martial arts classes can protect and strengthen your heart.

Martial Arts Raise the Heart Rate

The first way that martial arts can help the heart is by raising your heart rate when you work out. The heart is a muscle and it needs to be worked. When you take a martial arts class, your heart rate is elevated.

The benefit of raising the heart rate is that it oxygenates the blood, and helps promote calorie burning even after you’re done working out. People of all ages need to keep their hearts pumping, and martial arts is a great way to do it.

Martial Arts Lower Blood Pressure

Did you know that a high-intensity martial arts workout can help lower your blood pressure? It’s true. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a leading contributor to heart disease.

When you work out, your heart becomes stronger – and that means that it can pump blood more efficiently than it can without exercise. The less effort your heart has to expend on pumping blood, the lower your blood pressure is.

Martial Arts Lower Cholesterol

LDL cholesterol – the so-called “bad” cholesterol” – is a contributing factor in heart disease. Regular participation in martial arts helps you lose weight and that decreases the amount of LDL cholesterol in your blood.

There’s evidence that working out also shrinks the proteins that carry cholesterol through the bloodstream, making them less dangerous to the heart.

On a related note, regular vigorous exercise – such as the kind you get in a martial arts workout – helps to increase HDL or “good” cholesterol.

Martial Arts Reduces Stress

One thing that separates martial arts from many other forms of exercise is that it requires mental stillness combined with physical exertion.

Mental stillness contributes to mindfulness, a practice that can significantly decrease stress and anxiety in both children and adults.

Considering that there is a direct link between stress and heart health (stress contributes to high blood pressure and related issues), the fact that participating in martial arts can reduce stress is a huge benefit for the heart.

Conclusion

In addition to the benefits already mentioned, martial arts training also helps to improve discipline, build muscle coordination, and increase self-confidence.

This month, why not give your heart a boost by adding martial arts to your workout routine?

I have been a member of Don’t Survive Thrive BJJ Academy for a couple of years. It’s been one of the best decisions I have ever made. My experience there has been wildly positive. It is a clean, safe, friendly environment in a convenient central location. They have kids classes, teens classes, women only classes and general BJJ Fundamentals classes for all skill levels ranging from beginners to Black Belts. Whether you want to compete, learn a Martial Art for self-defense, or just want to exercise and have fun, Don’t Survive Thrive is the place for you. Hands down best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in Winnipeg.

Our son is a current member of this gym and belonged to the teen classes and now transitioned to the adult class. Very supportive and safe environment for learning BJJ. The adult members are great to the kids and teens and really make them feel welcome and a valued part of the club. Very experienced instructors who are patient and engaged with each member and always keeping safety prominent in their teachings. The club brings in world class instructors for seminars on a fairly regular basis. Great gym for an absolute beginner or seasoned athlete.

My 5 year old and I attended our first classes together. Both of us were nervous but by the time we left we were both hooked. Amazing instructors that really helped my son become absorbed and forget that hes the new kid. My first class was awesome as well. Amazing atmosphere and the gym is beautiful. I cant compare it to other gyms since I've never been to others but I couldnt reccomend it more for anybody who's curious about trying it but is a little apprehensive. You go one on one with your instructor and you just get a very basic rundown of some of the fundamentals, some escapes and just very simple techniques for your first day. The hours are so flexible that they can fit anybodies schedule. I cant stress this enough that if you're curious and really want to try it... TRY IT! cant say enough good things about this place.

Amazing coaches, partners and structured classes gives this gym a different feel compared to others. The emphasis on fundamentals really helps with learning the techniques over using force. Would definitely recommend

This gym has such a welcoming environment , amazing training partners and a top level coach. Professor Daniel Cobb is an incredible instructor, who has accumulated years of knowledge, and experience; I could not imagine training with a better group of people. These partners all help you grow everyday, and slowly become family. The facility is top notch - an amazing space that is always kept clean, with nice changing rooms, and showers. With his diverse approach to teaching the techniques, and making it easily understandable for all levels of students, Daniel has always given me the motivation to continue training, and stick with the sport I love.
