Chinook Country Historical Society - Calgary

 The Chinook Country Historical Society is a group of people dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of Canadian and Alberta history in Chinook Country for people of all ages. Organized in 1958 and incorporated in 1993, the CCHS covers the region from Olds to Nanton and from the BC border to the Saskatchewan border.

Each year from September to May, CCHS presents an exciting monthly series of historical lectures and special events. In addition, the Society's Historic Calgary Week celebrates the city's past with more than 60 walks, talks, and tours of many points of interest for 11 days beginning in late July. All CCHS programs are open to the general public and are free of charge excepting special events in December and March.

CCHS is a chapter of the Historical Society of Alberta. Our sister chapters are: Edmonton, Central, Lethbridge and Peace Country. More information about the Historical Society can be found on its website.

The Original Act governing the Historical Society of Alberta was passed in 1907 by the Alberta Legislature. (Revised June 2, 1972). The Act says in part: "The object of the Society shall be to encourage the study of the history of Alberta and Canada, to rescue from oblivion the memories of the original inhabitants, the early missionaries, fur traders, explorers, and settlers of the north and west of Canada, to obtain and preserve narratives in print, manuscript or otherwise of their travels, adventures, labour and observations, to secure and preserve objects generally illustrative of the civil, religious, literary and natural history of the country."
