Great museum of the colonial period of Montreal. Many interesting artifacts, maps and great discussions about the history. A must for those interested in the founding of French Canada.

Very nice museum, right in Old Montreal, steps from the Old Port. The main floor has a lot of artifacts from the when Mr. Ramezay would have been alive, including some really old legal tender from before the Bank of Canada issued legal tender. For me though, the real beauty was in a few of the first rooms you enter. The detailed wood panelling on the walls were hand carved! I'm a bit confused about their origins though as they were brought into Château Ramezay at a later date, so possibly not original. In any case, very beautiful rooms. On the basement level the walls and ceilings had a very different look and feel, and almost seemed more like what I'd expect from that era. The basement is also staged like what it would have been like at that time, so you can imagine yourself there at that time, and what it might have been like. We went during the pandemic, on a Sunday morning, and we had the place to ourselves as well, so that was wonderful. If you're going to visit, I'd highly suggest a Sunday morning if you want the place to yourself... Well, at least during the pandemic where foot traffic is likely to be less. We visited a bit early in the year, so the gardens behind the château aren't blooming yet, however the gardens are free to visit any time for anyone, no tickets required, so we'll go back in a month or so to check them out. All in all, nice château and museum, and the tickets are cheap, so I'd say worth the visit!

It is very entertaining and fun to know a little history, it is a good place to bring children. you can hear a bit of history in some languages, the governor's house is very beautiful and takes you for a moment to the past showing you objects from before! I think it is very good that they show us the history of Montreal! highly recommended

Great place that showed the entire Montreal or QCs evolvement in history. An interactive and fun way to learn. Only one star deducted for not taking advantage of using the upper floors to showcase all the owners furniture, lifestyle and all other display.

Very cool museum! There's a really neat vault in the basement to explore and beautiful woodwork throughout the house. There's also a beautiful garden out back to explore.

We enjoyed this museum but there are certainly areas that could be improved for future visits. For example, the lighting is very dim, making it hard to read the very small print on the curatorial notes, which were riddled with spelling mistakes. The museum is not particularly interactive and the iPads were out of order on most of the exhibits. That said, the museum itself has interesting content that speaks to Montreal's history and the history of Canada. There is a strong focus on Indigenous peoples and the Inuit as well as the arctic expedition which seems irrelevant to the Chateau itself but it was still fun and interesting to learn about. I would recommend this museum for first-timers but I personally would not visit a second time.
