About Chain Lakes Provincial Park

There are no laws prohibiting the use of metal detectors in the public areas of provincial parks as long as the activity isn’t interfering with the enjoyment of the other park visitors, breaking any of our other regulations, or in any way threatening any of the wildlife in the park.

Metal detectors can be used in the province’s parks, provided that:

  • They are only used on beaches and similar disturbed areas (where digging will not affect the natural ecosystem/habitat). In disturbed areas that are being excavated under a research permit, these areas are closed-off from the public to prevent recreational digging
  • No historic resources are damaged or removed
  • No items are removed from the park
  • All items of value (historical or monetary) are turned over to the local park office
  • They are used for recreation and not for commercial purposes
  • Their use doesn’t violate other laws, such as interfering with a person’s quiet enjoyment in the park. People operating metal detectors are encouraged to use an earpiece/headphones to reduce the likelihood of the noise disturbing others.

As in the case of other park users, a person can expect to encounter officers who will inquire about the activities being conducted and require them to identify themselves and their occupation.

In order to dig for historical resources, a person requires an excavation permit issued by the Parks Division under the Historical Resources Act; this permit is associated with archeological or paleontological research permit. In some locations the excavated items are likely to remain in the park for research and storage; in situations where an excavated item is to be removed from the park, a collection permit is required.

I love the water, so as I am discovering Southern Alberta, I am visiting the lakes around wherever I end up staying. Chain lakes provincial park is now my favorite place. I can walk for miles along the shore, I can go for a swim, or I can tan around the grassy picnic area.

1 hour drive south of Calgary. Amazing views and outstanding cafe. Best Alberta beef burgers and milkshakes!

It was OK! Not breath taking, certainly not the most beautiful place that I have been. The lake view was good but it was small and relatively crowded. There is cookhouse there that is cash only. Restrooms are free, don't have water but are relatively clean considering that it is middle of nowhere.

Good place to camp with your family and children, there is a big playground area, easy access to the lake and spacious parking lot. This was the only place I stayed that had no mosquitos or flys. On the other hand there was so many bees on my camping site that I found hard to be outside, C115 was the site. Stay away of this spot if you are allergic to bees or bring your epipen with you!

Great place for stargazing! The area is dark enough that you can see the Milky Way on clear nights and is an awesome meteor shower spot. It does get very cold at night even in summer so make sure to bring blankets and/or sweaters. The only downside is sometimes (typically on weekends I've found), there is a very bright light turned on over the bathrooms, which can make stargazing less than ideal, but overall, this is a very solid location.

We went camping this weekend at Chain Lakes campground. The camp ground is wonderful. People seemed friendly. However, the β€œno fires at all” is a deal breaker for us. After talking with Parks staff, we learned this is a Municipal District of Ranchlands decision. Camping isn’t the sam without a fire. Our weekend wasn’t a total loss. We enjoyed hanging out. Probably won’t return to this particular campground however. Disappointing really.

Beautiful small lake close to Calgary. Due to the vicinity to the city it can be very crowded in the weekends but almost empty and great place to enjoy during weekdays. Camp sites are private and large enough to accommodate big groups. Water is warm enough for swimming and tranquil to paddle boarding even if you are a beginner.

My favourite land on earth; I spend time here year round & it's always worth the drive. Being in the water in the summer, or on the ice in the winter; it's a beautiful place to be. Can be busy; but the park still contains space for the many critters roaming it's surrounding hills. Moose, elk, weasels, eagles, ravens, bears and many other wonderful creatures call this area home. The fresh water in this area has been and is still being fought for; with passionate folk doing doing best to protect this pristine land and water from coal projects. If you're spending time at the lake, summer or winter, please be respectful. Loud music & litter is detrimental to all the delightful lives scattered in the woods; and other people.
