About Bruce Bay Cottages & Lighthouse

These cottages were built in the 1920s & 1940s by fishermen who loved to fish the Great Lakes. The buildings have been kept as they were built open raftered, open studding and a wood stove to take off the morning chill. In days of yore the Fishermen would float their lumber and building supplies from the Town of Bruce Mines. For years they would boat to the mainland for supplies. A road was cut through the forest from Highway 17 to McCort Point,.

Not withstanding the structure and architecture of yesteryear, homey touches have been added, and the cottages are comfortable, clean. and equipped with showers, toilets, electric ranges, refrigerators and microwave ovens.

Harold Peterson purchased McKay Island from Ralph Hixon except for 1 acre which housed the McKay Island Lighthouse which was owned by the Canadian Federal Government. The road running along the south shore of French Island in most cases follows the old Lighthouse Keeper’s trail. Eventually a bridge was built allowing vehicular access to French Island and a causeway was subsequently built over a sandbar onto McKay Island.

The McKay Island Lighthouse was built by the Canadian Federal Government in 1907 to serve the timber industry. There were no roads going to Bruce Mines from anywhere in Northern Ontario. Locomotives, mining equipment, food supplies, building materials, men, women, and children all came by ship mainly out of Owen Sound Ontario.

The Federal government made arrangements with Harold Peterson to use his power poles so they could make the Lighthouse electrically operated. Later for cost reasons they decided to build a steel standard and tear down the deteriorating Lighthouse. When Harold Peterson became aware of this he persuaded them to sell him the lighthouse. The lighthouse was in need of repairs and the renovations began.

Today the McKay Island Lighthouse is our flagship housekeeping cottage and you can climb up into the tower and out onto the “widow’s walk” to enjoy the panoramic view of the south channel, the lights of Hilton Beach on St. Joseph Island and to the north the Town of Bruce Mines. The Great Lake freighters turn around right in front of the Lighthouse to back into Trap Rock docks to load up with trap rock. The McKay Island Lighthouse history is a story onto its own.

What an incredible experience at Bruce Bay cottages! We stayed in cottage 4 right on the little beach. It was the perfect size cabin for two, with everything you could possibly need. The property is beautiful and hosts incredible energy!! Make sure you ask Pat where the meditation rock is ;) I am dying to come back and spend more time at this peaceful little cottage on the lake. The kitchen was super clean, has everything you could need, warm water, great shower and even a bed on the veranda if you want to sleep out there and wake up to the sound of the lake. Heads up! It’s heated by a central fireplace so if it’s chilly make sure you pack well, and know how to light a fire. 10/10 would recommend !

It's a cute little place with great scenery however, the cabins (at least cabins 3-6) are just too close together, which would be fine if I were friendlier ?. Also, be advised there is no tv and the wifi is only accessed by walking to the end of the drive-way ( not very far)

Really enjoyed the cabin. Beds were decent, but the deck could use maintenance. Good wood stove as well, and appliances were good.

Want an amazing place! It makes for the perfect get away! The island is beautiful and extremely private. All of the cottages are right on the water, there are sand beaches, fire pits, kayaks, wifi, beautiful hiking trails, and a lovely host. Thanks for everything! ?

We just stayed in the lighthouse for the past few nights. It was a something we have been looking forward to since we booked it much earlier this year. Pat was great at keeping us informed with covid info - and any changes that would/would not affect our trip. Fortunately, everything went smoothly. We had a complete no-contact visit, with the lighthouse and both islands all to ourselves. It was wonderful to just enjoy this complete winter wonderland oasis. Our dog also took full advantage and romped through the trails. We managed to get out for a cross-country ski too. Pat even added a personal touch by putting a fully decorated Christmas tree up for us in the main room at the lighthouse. WONDERFUL experience... also, the sunrises that we got were fabulous!

Clean, extremely pet friendly with rustic cabins built in the 1920s. Wonderful walking trails with a gorgeous views to reward you. If you're staying long enough that you're going to cook several meals and enjoy your food preparation time I advise you bring a few mixing bowls and sharp knives. Otherwise very well supplied including towels and bedding. If you like the paddle you'll have several choices of what to go on to the water in. Fairy swimmable beach with diving Rock just off the screened porch. And seeing the young eagle fly over a few times was the highlight of my visit.

The drive up north to Bruce Bay Cottages was spectacular. It was a 7 hour road trip for us (myself, girlfriend, and the cat) but was worth every minute. Arriving to our cute little cottage overlooking the Bay was a fairytale dream. We spent the weekend on the water, enjoying the campfire, and siteseeing Lake Superior and stopping at Chippewa Falls for some fishing. Will def make a trip out again sometime, 5 out of 5 stars!
