Black Barn Farms

We purchased our farmland in 2017 with the dream of building a family farm. 

Before then the fields had been used mainly for growing and harvesting hay and grains to feed livestock over the winter. The soil was extremely depleted and compacted from years of being driven on by heavy equipment, ploughed under, and sprayed with chemical fertilizers. 

Even though we both grew up during a time when these conventional farming methods were the be-all end-all of agriculture, we both felt like there was a better way to farm and doing it this way was not natural or sustainable. 

Enter “Regenerative Agriculture”- a way of farming that works with the environment and promotes healing of the land by taking machinery and chemicals out of the equation (…you could say we’re “going against the grain!”). When biodiversity is able to return, so should the health of the soil…in 7-10years that is!

So we took our first baby steps and began weaning our acreage off of chemical fertilizers. We brought cows onto the fields and pigs into the woods to naturally fertilize the soil. And we don’t plan on stopping there! We want to plant more flowers and trees to attract bees, insects, birds, and pond life. We would like to add a variety of animals to our homestead in the future and we are also building nesting boxes for owls and bats- anything and everything we can think of to attract diversity and build the perfect family farm *literally* from the ground up! 

We believe that in order to provide our customers with healthy, quality farm products, we, in turn, need to provide a healthy, quality environment for all of the life on our farm. And these practices will in turn create a better future for our planet and the people who live here.
