Classic and Unexpected Deli Fare. Family-owned and operated traditional deli in the South End of Winnipeg.

About Bernstein's Deli

Since we opened our doors on February 1, 1985, Bernstein’s Deli has been a home for Winnipeggers eager to get a nostalgic deli meal.

Founding owner and Bernstein’s matriarch Marla became known for her classic holiday catering and variety of delicious soups, making Bernstein’s a staple in Winnipeg’s River Heights Community. 30 years later, we maintain those old family recipes while continually working on new creations to serve up to our loyal customers. Our reputation has not only been built on our signature deli fare, but even more importantly, our personalized customer service and homey atmosphere.

Oldest son Aaron joined the family business in November 2012. He brings with him an Engineering background with 4 years of consulting experience primarily in project management with local Aerospace firm Emteq. Aaron has injected a new energy into the business with a larger staff to provide better customer service and expanded hours. Experienced Head Chef Michael Fardoe has also been added to our crew, he works predominantly in the restaurant.

We have expanded our repertoire over the past few years to cater to modern tastes and dietary requirements with gluten-free and vegetarian options. We have also re-imagined deli food with our updated riffs on the classics, such as the Bison Reuben Burger, Grilled Chicken Caesar Sandwich, Big Quinoa Salad, Chicken (Fingers) & ‘Waffles’ (Pancakes), Potato Latke Fries and other tasty creations. Along with the start of the Winnipeg Jets hockey season, in collaboration with The Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN1290, we have introduced The Illegal Curve Sandwich. Also, as of September 1st, 2015 we have our liquor license so you can pair an ice cold brewski, wine or vodka with your favourite deli fare.

The aromas in the store are always enticing and ever-changing with all of the soups made from scratch along with many deli meats, dips, shmears, meatballs, gefilte fish, potato latkes, chopped liver and much more.

LOVE the pickles, the slaw, and the reuben. Comfort food at it's finest. Be sure to order extra hot mustard. Staff were friendly, food was fresh, tasty, and filling.

A good range of choices for a small restaurant. I appreciate they include several vegan options, so I can bring any of my family. The house corned beef is great, food is really tasty, not over-salted. Coffee is good, staff is friendly, and they try to keep those of us with health risks safe. And the shop side of the premises has all sorts of interesting food to take home.

A nice plain diner with reasonable prices for food and drinks. I had the Montreal smoked meat sandwich which was quite good, not salty at all. Only place I had better was in Montreal. Kind of figures. Service was also quick, good and friendly. Always try to stop here when in Winnipeg .

Fist time here and what a great experience! Extremely friendly and helpful staff. We went for their Le burger week entry. What a great burger if you love cheese. Great seasoned and flavorful patty. The sauce was the perfect addition to balance it all. We absolutely will return to try more of the menu.

I haven't been back here in years. It hasn't changed a bit. Well, they have added plexiglass shields between the booths, but the food is every bit as good as I remember. I was also very pleased thar despite the vax mandate being over they asked to see my POV, these days I really appreciate that detail. A new addition, since I was last there, was a Bison Ruben. It was delicious and I had a real battle saving half of it for my wife. I scared down a bowl of their borscht without pause and had to order a bowl of their daily special, mushroom and barley, for my better half. My friend had a toasted sandwich which she also enjoyed. The neat thing about this place is that the restaurant is an adjunct to their deli, and you pay for your meal at the register, which makes it very easy to make a few additions to take home. I picked up a pound (300 gr) of some very nice lean corned beef and two chicken schnitzel which did a very nice job as protein in the next days supper. It is a great place still, parking is a bit tight, but keep away from the peak hours and you will be well rewarded. 20220506 Went back for breakfast. They are still checking for proof of vaccination so imuno compromised can be a bit safer. We had latkes and sandwiches and they were fabulous as usual.

My boyfriend and I attempted to try Bernstein's Deli for the first time in March after finding them online in search of a good Reuben. To say that I was a little disappointed is an understatement when we excitedly arrived at the restaurant only to find that they had just closed early for the day. We later learned that they were short-staffed with employees isolating at home due to COVID-19. Fair enough. I'm glad to see a business being responsible and respecting the health of their customers and staff. Since then, I'd been eager to give them another chance the next time we were in Winnipeg. It's now May, and the Classic Reuben with a side of tangy coleslaw and two pickle spears was well worth the wait! The sandwich had a good amount of corned beef that was complemented by the hot mustard. I'd also recommend the Cheese Knishes; they were mildly sweet and served with strawberry compote and sour cream. Overall, Bernstein's was a delicious and comfortable dine-in experience. Their COVID safety precautions exceeded recommended protocols and were much appreciated; masks were strongly encouraged and staff were wearing them, plexiglass barriers separated the booths, and they required proof of vaccination when we were there (but are no longer doing so due to a downward trend in hospitalizations).
