The German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) is one of the most versatile sporting breeds around. They are one of the few hunting breeds that can perform virtually all gundog roles. The GSP can be a pointer and a retriever. Early versions of the GSP date back to the 17th century, but German Shorthaired Pointers as we know them today were created to be a multipurpose hunting dog in the mid to late nineteenth century. The GSP are a lean athletic, responsive all around hunting dog who is also an intelligent, affectionate companion and family dog. The GSP hunts many types of game, retrieves on land or from water, highly trainable and has great affection for you. They are smart, friendly, sense of humor and a willingness to please you. The GSP is enthusiastic in everything they do without being nervous or flighty.

The German Shorthaired Pointer has a chiseled head with dark almond-shaped eyes, an intelligent, good-humored expression with a large, dark nose. The dropped ears are broad and set high which lay flat against the head. Their sleek coat is dense and short. The coat is solid liver or liver and white, which can be patched, ticked or roan. The tail is usually docked, leaving about 40% of the original length. They have a striking easy care coat, but need daily vigorous exercise. If you are not a hunter, they also enjoy other activities such as walking, hiking, jogging or biking with you. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a house dog, who will love everyone in the family but being a loyal dog will probably pick a favorite person. German Shorthaired Pointers are people-oriented and don’t like to be left alone for long periods of time without activities. The GSP is a very intelligent dog who loves to please their people and be an active part of their life.
