About Avonlea Heritage Museum
The Avonlea Badlands located only about 4km outside of the Village of Avonlea is a must see. This unique landscape is located on private property and can only be accessed by pre-booking a guided tour. Tours here began in 2013 to help protect the fragile landscape and ecosystem and manage visitors while still allowing as many people as possible to experience what the Badlands have to offer. On a tour you will not only see the greatest features of the Badlands but also learn about the geology, paleontology, and archeology of the area, and the native plants and animals that call this home. Tours go out at two main times. Morning tours offer a great look at the birds and other wildlife in the area and is a nice hike before the hot summer sun heats up the desert like climate. More interested in photography? Try our evening tour going around sunset bathing the walls of the badlands in the orange glow of the iconic Saskatchewan sunsets. This easy hike of 3 km takes groups through native prairie to drastically change the view to badlands stretching out over the landscape. The tour takes an hour and a half to casually enjoy all the sights and the many notable spots. Contact the museum to book your spot before they fill up.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I was a bit turned off when I was told it was a guided tour for $5 (the guided part not the price) but it was well worth it. The lady offering the tour was so incredibly knowledgeable. She shared so many little stories and histories that you could never know from walking through. There are 2 main buildings and a small church to view. The larger building has some pretty fantastic displays with an old merchant store, a doctor's office as well as other neat things to look at!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Tanner was a helpful tour guide through the Avonlea Badlands August 24, 2020. We saw the carved out valley with Hoodoo structures and many layers of rock, stone and capstone. Lovely sage bushes some flowering purple and yellow. The walk takes about an hour and 15 minutes, maybe a little longer with a larger crowd. I recommend spring or fall for those who can’t take heat because there is no shade.
