I originally wrote a 2 page review about the atrocious professionalism of Jan with OnlyBC and I created this account just to write this review. I ran out of character room on here of course so here is a condensed version, please stick with me: We booked 2 nights in Tofino at a waterfront 2 bedroom unit with a bunk bed for April 2020. We had to change our plan due to me being an emergency services worker and staff shortages due to Covid. We got in contact with Jan to change our dates to November 2020. Once we got a hold of Jan he said it shouldn’t be an issue and sent us a link through Airbnb to confirm the change of dates and once we completed the steps with Airbnb, everything would be good to go. As far as we know, we did everything correctly. We never heard anything back from Jan and never received an email from Airbnb but we assumed everything was in order (which I get we should have double checked). In Sept 2020 we contacted Jan to confirm our dates for that coming November. Jan had no idea what we were talking about and said he didn’t have us booked in. Jan argued with us the whole time and we had to prove to him by forwarding his last email that we had even talked to him in the past. Jan finally remembered, but started accusing us of lying and being scammers trying to get a free stay in Tofino. We had already payed for our stay and he stated we stayed on the original April dates and are now trying to stay again for free. Jan then said we filled out the change request incorrectly. He was so rude to my wife on the phone that she ended up in tears, and I ended the conversation by hanging up on him. A few minutes later, Jackie (Jans partner) called back and said that we could pick another date to stay in the new year as we had already payed. We took a week to pick a couple new dates, but I called Jan back to book in. Jan had no idea who I was or what I was talking about until I reminded him of calling us scammers and how he made my wife cry. He back peddled saying he was far too busy with his construction company and had a hard time keeping track. We said we could come in January 2021 or April 2021 but preferred April. Jan replied by saying both dates are available but we had to take the January date because “there is a better chance of regular customers booking in April” We booked the January dates as there is no point arguing with Jan. The week before our trip I called Jan to ensure we were still booked in and the door code was the same and Jan confirmed it. He even had the gall to wish me a good trip and to have fun in Tofino. When my family arrived, well after check in time there was someone already in my unit. I called Jan and he said he didn’t have me booked in, yet in the next breath he said he only had me booked for one night, not two on his calendar and was trying to take advantage of the low season so had his contractor staying in the unit instead to do some work. Jan found another place available which he said was “right on chesterman beach, and the only thing available”. However, it’s not, you look at the highway, and it was a one bedroom unit. I could either take the unit or drive 4 ½ hours home with my whole family. My 17 year old slept on the pull out couch and my 3 and 6 year olds had to sleep on the floor. There was barely enough bedding for us all, so my wife and I slept with only a sheet in the middle of January. There wasn’t even propane in the BBQ to cook our dinner. I wish I could convey better how unprofessional and uncaring Jan is. He does not care about you or your family. Not only is he extremely disrespectful and demeaning to his customers, he outright lies to you or tells you what you want to hear like a used car salesman. I’m hoping this review will at least sway your opinion on staying somewhere that Jan and OnlyBC manages.

My Fiancé and I had a DT Victoria suite rented for Feb 12-14th for a weekend getaway to relax and unwind from our busy work life. Dinner reservations, spa day all booked. At first glance everything was fine. I message Jan Twice to ask about parking with no response at all. They are supposed to be super hosts on Airbnb. Yesterday I thought I’d give them a call to see if I could get a response regarding parking and Jan answered and told me there is parking across the street and I could figure it out myself. I was a little shocked at how rude he was. As I was trying to say ok and ask another question, I was hung up on. I tried to call back but there was no response. A few hrs later I was sent a standard Airbnb email stating they are looking forward to hosting us. Then today, I received an email stating they are cancelling our reservation because a previous guest had Covid and to go find another place. I was completely put off as it was very rude. Then the listing was removed from the plate form. If I treated my guests at my cottage that way, I’d be out of business. We had to cancel all other plans as we no longer can find a pet friendly rental with such short notice. We do not recommend OnlyBC at all. Huge disappointment with how we were treated.

We booked this property through Airbnb for February 2020. Upon leaving we rebooked for February this year while on the phone with Jan. He never ever said we weren’t rebooking through Airbnb or that there were any different policies or expectations. It was only when I tried to cancel our reservation due to COVID and in keeping with Airbnb cancellation policy, he stated that since we had booked directly with him and not through Airbnb, we wouldn’t get our deposit back. Additionally, he strung me along for weeks with the possibility that we may be able to get some compensation, which never happened. I have a head injury and he was very nasty about my struggles to understand what had happened and really did nothing to make the situation better, at one point telling me I had five minutes to make a decision about trying to get some kind of compensation or not. There were three people all paying separate and I needed to check with them, so couldn’t answer right away. We have been coming to Tofino for over 12 years and this is by far the absolute worst experience we have ever had.

This was our second trip and it was even better than the first. The second you arrive at The Beach House you feel a sense of calm and completely unwind. A perfect Artist's retreat. Shannon is the prefect host! Can't wait to comeback!

Been renting from Jan at Only BC for awhile now, always willing to help and to compromise on important matters. The places are cleaned regularly and beautifully furnished. Now is a good time not to be too tied down and their rates on rentals are a great deal comparatively. Would definitely recommend to friends and fam!

Jan was a wonderful host! Thank you so much for leaving balloons for my daughters birthday : ) Check-in was simple and the accommodation was well appointed and spotless. Jan was prompt to answer any questions and was a pleasure to deal with. The 3rd bedroom was more of a loft than a private bedroom and rooftop is accessed from the master bedroom. All in all a great stay!

Stunning!!! Jan is a wonderful professional host, always accomodating and kind. I have stayed at his properties many times and always can't wait to go back. Beautiful ocean views, luxury style and perfect location. Can't say enough positive things about our experiences with Onlybc - thank you so much for the stay!

Very disappointed with my experience with onlybc and Jan. I booked a vacation to Tofino for my family and needed to reschedule do to timing of our stay. I received no response back from Jan about numerous requests to change my reservation dates. Finally I called to see why I wasn't getting a response and I was told to cancel and re-book for the new dates (which would mean I would lose out on my initial deposit). I asked him 3 times what the difference was for him to just accept my reservation change request and he wouldn't really answer my question except to tell me that people have been beaten down due to covid. He is a superhost on airbnb which blows my mind since they are required to respond to messages right away to get that status. I also talked with someone at airbnb and they didn't seem to care that he was treating people this way. I was forced to cancel my reservation and lost my initial deposit. I will never book with onlybc again. I am sure the accommodations are wonderful but make sure you have a relaxed cancellation policy when you book it. If you have to change anything at all he will not be accommodating. Also if you look closely, Jan has put a review on here for himself. Must be bad when you have to go on here and give yourself a 5 star review to boost ratings.
